Types of Loft Conversion

Transforming homes and lofts since 2000

There are several different types of loft conversion available, so how do you choose the most suitable for your particular project?

Fortunately, Allied Lofts are here to guide you through the process. Each different type of loft conversion has pros and cons, mainly revolving around cost, planning permission requirements and amount of extra space available. Here we provide a simple guide, comparing the merits of each type of loft conversion.

Dormer Loft Conversion

A dormer loft conversion is an extension built to protrude from the existing sloping roof. It creates more usable space with extra headroom and more natural light.

There are a variety of different types of dormer loft conversion. The one most suited to your property depends upon the type of property (terraced, semi-detached or detached) and the shape of your existing roof.

  • Flat Roof Dormer

This is the most popular type of dormer in the UK. As well as being the cheapest to build, it offers the most additional internal space.

  • Shed Roof Dormer

Similar to a flat roof dormer, but the single plane roof slopes downwards at a shallower angle than the roof itself. Often used on properties with a gable roof.

  • Gable Fronted or "Dog House" Dormer

A more attractive option which comprises of a gable wall extension built up to the existing ridge line and a new roof section built outwards to the new gable end.

  • Hipped Roof Dormer

Similar to a gable fronted dormer, but featuring 3 sloping planes of a hipped roof converging at the ridge of the dormer.

Allied Lofts will help you ascertain the best type of dormer for your project.

Hip to Gable Loft Conversion

A hip to gable loft conversion is a popular option for hipped roof properties (roofs which have 3 or more sloping sides) such as detached and semi-detached homes, end terraces, bungalows, etc.

The conversion basically extends the side roof area so that the hipped roof which formerly sloped inwards becomes a vertical wall, so the roof becomes a gabled roof and you gain extra usable space inside the loft.

Mansard Loft Conversion

A mansard loft conversion is the best option for maximising the additional space but they generally involve the most work and therefore cost compared to other options.

The mansard loft conversion effectively changes the slope of the roof to an angle of 72 degrees, and adds a flat top. Windows are built into the new structure as small dormers.
